Below the Line: Pandaram in The Abyss
The easy reading is that he is two men: a brutal trader and a doting father. But Pandaram is not divided. He lives by a line. Above it are the people who count, and for them he is capable of real, even extravagant tenderness. Below it, everyone is subhuman, and their suffering registers as noise.
